The Age Does Award Winning PR — Oops Was That Meant To Be Science?

RE: “Sceptic: one inclined to doubt accepted opinions” by Michael Bachelard, The Sunday Age
———————————–
The Age, newspaper, satireFor free, and just because I’m a nice person, I’m going to help Michael Bachelard with his science articles.
He’s a Walkley Award winner writing for the two largest “broadsheet” circulation papers in Australia. He knows indigenous issues, politics and industrial relations, so “climate science” was the … er, obvious next step, right?
The Age (and by default, it’s sister The Sydney Morning Herald) decided to pretend to investigate the most burning climate questions the public could offer. But their investigations apparently amounted to phoning up government agents and fans of the policy, and asking them what to write.

It’s titled: Sceptic: one inclined to doubt accepted opinions, but it could have been titled Journalist: one inclined to parrot groupthink
Poor Bachelard is out of his depth in the science trying to answer Stephen Harper and Harry Hostan’s questions. For an investigative journalist he had odd ideas about how to get answers, almost never contacting the people or groups he wrote about directly. Who knows, maybe the servers at Fairfax don’t allow emails out to non-lefties at the moment, because he doesn’t seem to have contacted anyone who could have helped him get the information right.

PR example number 1: Totally wrong, and with no research!

Forced by a skeptic to notice the massive Petition Project, Bachelard “debunks it” with something that isn’t true. He claims the “institute does not release the full list of names, so it can’t be verified”. But it takes two minutes of searching online to turn up the full list of 31,500 names listed alphabetically, and also arranged by State (it makes that verification easier). Could someone show Bachelard, Bing, Yahoo, or Google?
For further confirmation, I emailed Art Robinson, the man who knows more about the project than anyone, to make sure that all the names were listed and got a reply within hours. Yes, they certainly are.
Dismissing the 9,000 PhDs and 22,000 science graduates, Bachelard offers mindless handwaving: the Petition it seems “has been given credibility by conservative and sceptical commentators”, as if leftie commentators were correct somehow for actively ignoring it. (If only those could think of a good reason why they keep saying “there is a consensus” when clearly there isn’t.) Instead, the Petition got credibility the only way that counts, the hard way, by amassing an enormous list, which includes eminent, highly qualified award winning physicists, as well as professors, doctors, engineers and geologists. Rather than being a two minute web survey, the organizers also published a detailed paper reviewing its highly considered position. It’s been up for years now, if there were fake names, or non-scientists, they would have been exposed.
The list has so much credibility, and is so hard to attack, Bachelard has to resort to saying things are aren’t true and making petty ad hominem attacks on the size of the Institute. The fact that this extraordinary project grew out of one man’s passionate work, starting from his farm, only makes the Petition more authentic. (If it had come from a large institute, presumably Bachelard would have dismissed it because it was well funded, right?)
Make no mistake, scientifically, the petition proves nothing, but politically, it blows the consensus out of the water.

The sloppy journalist misses the real revolution

There has never been an uprising of scientist-whistleblowers like this one, and the petition is just the tip of the iceberg of the revolution online that is changing the way science is being done. Like much of the internet activity, the Petition was done by volunteers, paid for with individual private donations, and all the volunteers and many of the donors are PhD scientists. If Greenpeace could name 9,000 PhD’s on their team it’d be in headlines, across posters, and on bumper stickers too.

PR Example number 2: Invent wacko statements from skeptics

Because lazy journalists think they “know” what skeptics say by only talking to their alarmist buddies, they misrepresent the skeptics. (Note to Bachelard: seriously, if you value your reputation, you can email skeptics, we don’t bite, and we speak English too. We can save you from looking like a sock puppet of a self-interested government agency.)
The basics of greenhouse chemistry are agreed on by most skeptics and the IPCC, it’s a non-point. So it’s a tad embarrassing that Bachelard inadvertantly paints the Prize winning brilliant meteorologist, Richard Lindzen, as a “denier” of basic physics, when Lindzen is strictly in the same camp as the IPCC on this point.  Bachelard implies Lindzen alone does not think water vapor “is the most effective agent of global warming”. Ha ha, what a joke. This is high school physics, and shows how far behind the main game Bachelard is. Every tri-atomic molecule like CO2 and H2O is a greenhouse gas (count the atoms: 1,2,3). H2O is 25 – 100 times as abundant as CO2. In his entire five decade career, Richard Lindzen would never have uttered such nonsense. Bachelard wants to paint Lindzen as a loner, extremist, dare I say it — denier?
Bachelard probably excuses himself by thinking he’s helping the planet (the rocks won’t thank you Michael), but these kind of poorly researched PR statements make him just another patsy tool of tricksters, sloppy thinkers, and religious zealots who come to take away honest citizens money for spurious causes.

PR Example number 3: Only show the public what they are “allowed to see” (hide those weather balloons!)

Michael, the sites or the people who told you the hot spot contained “discrepancies” that don’t matter didn’t show you just how obvious, unequivocal or blatant the “discrepancies” are. You linked to this graph of the hot spot, and called it “frightening”:
Figure 9.1. Zonal mean atmospheric temperature change from 1890 to 1999 (°C per century) as simulated by the PCM model from (a) solar forcing, (b) volcanoes, (c) wellmixed greenhouse gases, (d) tropospheric and stratospheric ozone changes, (e) direct sulphate aerosol forcing and (f) the sum of all forcings. Plot is from 1,000 hPa to 10 hPa (shown on left scale) and from 0 km to 30 km (shown on right). See Appendix 9.C for additional information. Based on Santer et al. (2003a).
But what’s frightening, is that the IPCC are not honest enough to show you what the 28 million weather balloons actually found. That graph shows you what the modelsexpected to find (see especially c “well mixed greenhouse gases” and f “the sum of all forcings”). That’s the hot-spot they predict, which amplifies the warming from CO2 by a factor of three. Without the amplification from water vapor, the IPCC predictions collapse from 3 degrees to 1 degree or less.
Now cast your eyes on the graph of millions of weather balloons released since 1959 below. Repeat after me: “the models are accurate, I can see that the discrepancy between the weather balloons and the models predictions in (f) above is inconsequential, and yellow IS red!”
...

Propaganda trick number 4: The Questions they won’t ask the other side
And here’s another give- away that Bachelard is a PR writer disguised as a journalist (though he may not know it himself) — the questions he asks the skeptics. They are fair questions, but I’ll bet that Bachelard has never asked a believer of the theory the same thing. Do correct me if I’m wrong, but try on these questions below — imagine a journalist asking these of Greg Combet, or Julia Gillard, Ross Garnaut or Tim Flannery?
.
3. When did you become a [believer in climate change]?
I mean really, when did the passion overtake you, Julia? Was it years ago, in your lawyer days, was before you told Rudd to drop the CPRS, or was it in the three weeks after the last election?
.
4. What are your main sources of information?
Dear Greg, the nation depends on you getting the policy right, have you spoken to Richard Lindzen, Bob Carter, William Kininmonth or Garth Paltridge, or do you just assume the Yes-men in the Department of Climate Change are telling you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
.
5. What are your general political views?
Tim, belief in man-made warming is much stronger in leftie voters, which way do you vote?
.
6. Do you ever have doubts?
Ross, your reputation depends on a complex science issue. Do you ever have doubts that the IPCC models have exaggerated the effects of feedbacks, and that your entire economic analysis is based on flawed science?
.
7. Do you think there’s a conspiracy to push [against] global warming?
Julia, Greg, Tim, Ross: Do you believe that thousands of scientists are being paid by Exxon to put their names on petitions and write comments on blogs? Has the $23 million paid by Exxon been able to neutralize the $79 billion paid by governments and the vested interests of all the financial houses who benefit from over $100 billion of carbon trading turnover each year?
Michael, any time you want to do a real investigative story on climate science, genuine questions will be welcome.

See Stephen Harpers comment at #4 on the interview, and the print copy complete with him labeled a “contrarian” because he dares to ask for evidence.

Your Phallus Is You

Lama Drukpa Kinley, affectionately known as the 'Divine Madman' is one of the most beloved saints in Bhutan. He was a raconteur, breaking down conventional realities by literally pushing the norms and mores of the times. The weapon he chose was the 'Divine Thunderbolt of Wisdom'-  the penis which is depicted today in most Bhutanese homes in all manners of manifestations.

The phallus is as Bhutanese as its chieftain, Lama Drukpa Kinley. He came to Bhutan from Tibet in the 15th century as the Yogi Kunga Legpai Palzangpo to teach local folks about Buddhism in more ways than folks were accustomed to and shocked and provoked the common citizenry by using gung ho methods, with entertaining poetry, songs, dance, and humor, more often than not combined with drinks and sex. It was almost akin to the sixties spirit of sex, intoxicants and rock and roll the divine way- the way of the crazy-wisdom master.

He occasionally applied all of his teaching methods with his hosts' wives, too.

Today, Lama Drukpa Kinley lives on in very visible and distinctive incarnations, all of which depict the penis. The phallus is today a ubiquitous artwork that both amuses and entertains the visitor strange to such sights but to the Bhutanese, its more than just a painted phallus- it’s the essence of the Divine Madman himself and his enlightened mind. Its said of the painted phalluses that ‘what you see is what you get from the very projection you have made’. In other words, the phallus is just a metaphor for the way ‘You See Your Own Mind And Its Projections’. Thus a disgusted on looker showcases his own intolerance and shame, just as an admirer mirrors his own thoughts.

Lama Drukpa Kinley traveled a lot; wondering from valley to valley, and always on the prowl apparently seeking sex, wine and rock and roll. But when one peels aside the obviously entertaining aspects of his exploits, it basically boils down to teaching people the core principles of Buddhism and those that are un-Buddhist in nature, such as intolerance, ignorance, attachment, clinging to the ego and man’s inherent guilt, shame and superficial pride.

He traveled extensively in western and parts of central Bhutan, and left behind a quaint and picturesque monastery in the form of Chimi Lhakhang en route to Punakha and Wangduephodrang.

The monastery was erected by the beloved lama’s relative in 1499. Today it’s a popular tourist destination and a visit is a must if you are into the Divine Madman’s living and attitude towards life and more seriously for couples who are unable to conceive.
One visits the temple, and is promptly welcomed into the confines of the sacred lhakhang (temple), with a blessing from a wooden or stone made phallus. Thud goes the sound and bong goes the heart; with the exciting and hopeful expectations of being able to conceive a child. Couples are encouraged to spend a night in the lhakhang to make certain conception takes place indeed.

Stories abound of barren women suddenly going fertile and coming back with gratitude and thanks and presents and a little baby in tow.

Besides conception, phalluses are believed to ward off bad and unwonted spirits or the bad-eye or the wagging-tongue form being a bother.

Stories abound of the magic and miracle of the Divine Madman. One story is that of a tourist guide chaperoning a foreign-father and his 16 year-old daughter. When our guest wanted to know what was that ‘hanging thing’ the guide, a bit embarrassed on account of the girl, coyly said ‘Sir, it’s your thing". Other accounts recount a white couple from the US who managed to conceive a child. The baby, very curiously, looked oddly Asian, somewhat Bhutanese. In another tale yet again involving another white couple, the joy of having a child ayt last was more than a tad marred on account of the child looking curiously black.
He lived between 1455 and 1529.

But Seriously!!!
Drukpa Kunley, a mahasiddha and an accomplished poet from Dreuley Monastery. Known as The Divine Madman of the Dragon Lineage, Drubwang Drukpa Kunley was renowned for his crazy methods of enlightening other beings.
With mostly female disciples, he thus also earned the name The Saint of 5000 Women. He was known, for example for walking into prayer halls and emitting a beautiful smell as he walked by younger monks; then, as he walked towards the older monks, he would fart and emit a very bad smell of faeces. When the monks confronted him about this, he would tell them that the smell is a reflection of how well or badly the monks were holding their vows and morality.
He was also very famous for his teachings in desire, often using very unconventional ways to point out people’s attachments and desires to them. For example, he would lay down on a public street with his private parts exposed and his penis erect. Nuns would walk past him, showing at first how shocked they were. Then, they would walk closer to him to look at his private parts, point and talk.
When they asked him why he was doing this and causing so much trouble, he would merely tell them that he was not doing anything – it was them who were making it a big spectacle out of it. He would then give them profound teachings about desire.
Both of Drukpa Kunley’s succeeding reincarnations did not live particularly long lives. Whilst Drukpa Kunley entered clear light at the age of 74, his succeeding incarnation Drukpa Dragpa Gyeltsen was just 25 years old when he passed into clear light. The third incarnation of the Dreuley lineage lived for just 58 years.

A TASTE OF THE DIVINE MADMA’S MANTRA

THE REQUEST IN EARNEST:

Respected Management,

I, the penis, hereby request a raise in salary for the following reasons:
I do physical labor.
I work at great depths.
I plunge head first into everything I do.
I do not get weekends off or public holidays.
I work in damp environments.
I don't get paid overtime.
I work in dark workplaces with poor ventilation.
I work in high temperatures.
My work exposes me to contagious diseases.

AND ON CUE< CAME THE REPLY:

Dear Penis,

After assessing your request, and considering the arguments you have raised, the administration rejects your request for the following reasons:

You do not work eight hours straight.
You fall asleep on the job after working only briefly.
You do not always follow the orders of the management.
You do not stay in your allocated position, and often visit other areas that are off-limits.
You do not take any initiative- you have to be pressured and stimulated in order for you to do your job.
You always leave the workplace messy at the end of your shift.
You don't always observe necessary safety regulations, such as wearing safety and protective clothing.
And you'll retire well before you turn sixty-five.
You cannot perform double shifts.
You sometimes leave your designated position before you have even completed the day's work.
And furthermore, you have been spotted constantly entering and leaving the workplace carrying two suspicious-looking sacks.

Considering the above, the management is sorry to inform you that your said request cannot be entertained or considered for reasons cited above.
And let this be a reminder of where you stand erect and where you sit limp and hopeless.

Sincerely,
The Management

Medusa's Media Gets The Whiplash- About Time

Okay. Here's an opener- before you all jump boat, ship, hut or mansion, I’m with the media, been with the media, and the absence if its been felt has been a premeditated one. Like a snake, writers often need to shed, peel or skin off that old worn out bloodied and badgered outfit and get into a brand new get up so that the juices can kick in again, just Google Hunter S Thompson- the Good Gonzo Doctor himself and his tireless pursuit of and utter destruction of that Writer's Rut..
So before naysayers, who in this peculiar case constitutes the so called media fraternity, comes to any conclusion, lemme rest your diseased cells, sickened minds and pronounce right upfront that I still write- and that being IN the media DOES NOT necessarily constitute any relationship with the art and craft of writing; a requirement seldom practiced and a circus that's increasingly becoming an unnecessary limb protruding rather profusely daily, biweekly and so on and so forth.
First up here’s the fist: there’s no such thing as a media fraternity. There are people doing the same shit but that does not qualify it as a fraternity.
Insecurity and jealousy rules the roost that shelters or protects the chickens that hide in there shooting bullets over a so-called colleague's abused shoulder.

Secondly there is NO MEDIA. So forget the media fraternity part, media itself is a ghost like Phantom and Phantom the Comic Caper definitely carries more credibility than the charade that parades itself as the MEDIA.

And now the final revelation: the so called MEDIA we have is a Make-Over; an eye wash lashing at the public in the guise of being a sensible and responsible communicator and using self-serving terms such as THE FOURTH ESTATE and turning those venerable words into diseased clichés.

In a word, the MEDIA is a JOKE that isn't funny and those running and manning these so called MEDIA HOUSES are both the MASTERS of the CIRCUS and the JOKERS parading in them trying to entice serious laughter. But here’s the thing: THEY CHARGE YOU AN ENTRANCE FEE TO COME SEE THAT FARCE and then expect you to RESPECT and SUPPORT that ACT.

And behind the scenes, silhouetted in dark shades or looking every inch the credible and hard working underpaid and malnourished stressed-out pussycat is the goddamn SENIOR CITIZEN of the MEDIUM; clad in a grimy gho and spectacles that do NOT break! How Apt; The Spectacle!

I know a few. And in a case or two, I owe them ASSAULTS.

The media we have is a MEDUSA’S HEAD. You know when the MOIC inaugurated the MEDIA AWARDS, a well intentioned but misguided effort now thankfully discontinued along with the frenzy with which it was first inaugurated- happy winners applauding it and sore losers decrying the unfairness.
On its second outing, they gave the best feature/investigative award to a pothead for doing a story on cannabis in a village full of poor and innocent villagers trying to make a quick buck- you could not, in all your conscience, begrudge them that.
The villagers went to jail and the pothead came back with a few grams of the fresh hashish and that crowning jewel on the crown they dubbed "BEST GNH STORY!"
The MEDUSA’S many heads and limbs dangling hither and dither has now gotten advanced cancer and the cancer is cannibalistic – it’d eat its own genitals if it could but bend down and stretch out enough to get down to that prick and choke it down, nerve by nervous nerve, grind by uncouth grind, till the very thing splits open the shallow throat and comes falling down in that bottomless belly of greed, myopia, shallowness, insecurity, callousness, power plays, envy, selfishness, discontent, and duping the same reader over and over again with a change in the header here, a conclusion in the kicker there but all with the predictable conclusion.

But as we say, it’s in BLACK & WHITE and there’s no escaping that fundamental realty – probably the best thing going for the so-called MEDIUM.

Well, the jig is up you jumping fleas, for I’m here, naked and raw as a newborn bastard, ready to throw up the hypocrisies you all fed me disguised as wholesome wheat.
The medium is sick. That sickness ails the so-called media maestros and the houses of deception and corruption they continue to built.

Here are a few tips:

If the medium (I’m not gonna dignify the M****RF*****S) is sick, why can’t they get the proper treatment?
If it’s a loss-making venture, how come the numbers keep piling up?
If its about some misguided sense of patriotism gone wrong, don’t worry, let someone who has the heart, the head and the pockets to back the causes pick up the mantle and the bill.
After all, this is not a nation deprived of real people with real professionalism and passion.

The MOIC was right in trying to frame an Ad Policy via Circulation and other measureless measurables, such as Circulation. Most houses print less than a quarter of the amount they are required to under legal and ethical provisions. They inflate the numbers on paper; in reality, so-called national newspapers don’t even make it out of the Capital. If they do, you can practically count the number of newspapers distributed nation-wide on your ten fingers. Forget your toes, thankfully there's no need to bend over to get a proper count.
It’s just that much.

Now here’s the Dessert: They get an equal amount of the RGOB Ad Pie!!! BINGO!!!

This piece is poisoning my own peace… so really, I’ll continue the EX-PO-SE as I've experienced it on another night… but for now, my fellow DRUKPAS of this BLESSED LAND, beware the stuff you read, for they come soiled and stained, and investigate whenever you hear stuff like CREDIBILITY, HONOR, OBJECTIVITY, FAIR, FORTHRIGHT, PUBLIC SERVICE and the like emanating from the MEDUSA'S many mouths. But there's good news too... the RGoB now has done what it should have- looked at Media Houses and realized they ain't never gonna grow up, and hence stopped the Spoon-Feeding. Now let's see how it does cope with Growing Up, or NOT as might be the case along with Righteous Claims of the Fourth Estate going down under and dragging with it DEMOCRACY itself.
Its just so predictable... And kudos to MoIC and MoF for doing what needed to be done- taken out the whiplash, for I'd rather read a good paper or two rather than have a quantity of nonsensical chaos parading as responsible newspapers and the harbingers of truth.
For Now, Its a Jolly Good Night!

Turtle & The Tree

I've been around a while. I sprouted from nature’s scattered seeds and found myself rooted on a hill that overlooks the Thimphu valley. I’m not the most majestic of pine trees, neither is the hill on which I grew. I’ve seen a valley of rice fields and apple orchards, shepherded by simple men of faith, gradually transform into a city of cables and cars.

I don’t judge what I witness; I simply recount what I see. Development and progress are just words, whether it represents good or bad is relative.

Farmers who knew and worked the land with respect died. Their sons became educated. The knowledge their sons acquired brought about roads, electricity, factories and industry.

My kind were cut and burnt. Slashed and hacked. The valley saw more educated sons return back from lands near and afar, with yet more sophisticated ways and means on manipulating the environment around them. We missed the woodcutter seeking solace in our shades as modern machineries chain sawed us into submission.

Suddenly, the valley was flooded with people and goods. It could not accommodate them all, yet it kept over flowing. The paddy fields started disappearing along with the farmers. New crops began to sprout and spread. These didn’t grow in the lands, they grew in factories. The race to consume had begun. Self-sustenance and frugality had given way to dependence and obesity. Contentment was scant. The division of the haves and have-nots had widened. The less wanted more and the more wanted yet more. The valley was becoming a city of greed, power, corruption and apathy.

The limited land had become so precious that families fought, friends quarreled and neighbors jostled, all mutually suspicious and skeptical. My neighboring hills began to lose their trees. The air was poisoned and grand bungalows silhouetted the hills in the setting sun. There were fewer and fewer trees as the years rolled by. Down in the valley, the survival of the craftiest nudged away decency and goodness.

In time, the valley became dense with discontentment, anger, jealousy and hatred. The river became the recipient of all its filthy refuses. The mountains became the domain of the jealous gods. The lowlands became the realm of the hungry ghosts.

But there was a tribe still; honorable, courageous and free. A tribe of strong faith, they believed the shortcomings could be alleviated. They were too few and far between, yet they toiled hard. They did it because they believed the organic life could be sustained without the pitfalls the valley had been victim to.

So they toured as many hills, mountains, plains and valleys as they could. They discovered the pastoral life gave them rest and peace. They discovered that though farmers co-inhabited the land in harmony with its flora and fauna, they were happier than the valley of sweets, lights, televisions and vehicles- that though the farmers were poor, their way of life was rich.

Thus they came back to the heaving valley with renewed hope. They decided to resurrect the old ways and means and preserve them for all generations. The tempting sensual distractions of the valley’s many hues did not distract them. They realized that in the long run, the citizenry would lose all sense of courtesy and eat their own kind. To avoid this looming tragedy, they crafted a new way of looking at development and progress. They called it Gross National Happiness. This method was to be used keeping in mind the cultural and traditional values of all the mountains, valleys, hills, gorges, rivers, glaciers and everything they contained and represented.

This was applauded by lands near and afar. The hungry ghosts and the jealous gods also began to partake in its nobility. To ascertain that it would not just dissolve into deceptive clouds, the faithful preached and practiced it wherever they went. It was, for instance, declared that no matter what, all the forests in all the valleys high and low would be conserved and protected- that it would not be sacrificed in the name of development, progress and prosperity.

There is three of my kind left on this hillock. Only little children notice us. In passing cars, we hear them say to their parents, “look up! There’s a turtle climbing up that hill.”

It’s a moving illusion. But if you can keep the turtle and the tree, their stories and sights will always set you free.
